Leaky Gut: Causes, Symptoms

Leaky gut, medically referred to as increased intestinal permeability, describes a situation where the intestinal barrier becomes more permeable than normal. Your gut lining acts as an important protective boundary, controlling what moves from the digestive tract into the body.

Intestinal permeability

When something can enter without the normal regulation, it breaks the barrier of the intestinal wall. Several factors may affect gut barrier function. Chronic intestinal inflammation, infections, certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption, ongoing stress, and an unhealthy diet have all been investigated in relation to changes in intestinal permeability.

Diet is particularly important when discussing leaky gut causes. A diet high in ultra-processed foods, added sugars and refined carbohydrates may negatively affect overall gut health, especially when it replaces fiber-rich whole foods. A lack of dietary fiber can also influence the gut microbiome, which plays an important role in supporting the intestinal lining.

Gluten and wheat are another common part of the conversation. In people with celiac disease, gluten can trigger intestinal inflammation and damage. However, this does not mean wheat automatically causes leaky gut in everyone.

Outer signs, inner Causes

Possible signs associated with poor gut health can include bloating, abdominal discomfort, irregular bowel movements, and digestive changes, although these symptoms can have many different causes. Leaky gut is the main root cause that can lead to Autoimmune disease.

Supporting gut health starts with a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains and other fiber-rich foods, along with adequate hydration, sleep and regular physical activity.

The key takeaway: protecting the gut lining is an important part of overall digestive health, and lifestyle and dietary habits can play a meaningful role.
